How to Bulk upload files to the WordPress Media Library using FTP

Uploading multiple files simultaneously to the WordPress Media Library is a tedious and time-consuming task. Especially, for an Ecommerce website, where you have to upload multiple product images.

It is possible to bulk upload files through WordPress’s built-in library upload tool, Media >> Add New page, but you may face issue of maximum file upload size limit. With the help of File Transfer Protocol, you can easily transfer multiple files from your computer to your WordPress website.

Follow these three steps mentioned below to bulk upload files to WordPress Media Library using FTP.

Step 1: Connecting your system to your WordPress website via FTP

First, you need to Download and install an FTP Client. FTP client is a server through which you can connect your system to the WordPress website and transfer files using FTP protocol. In this article, we have explained the process using FileZilla FTP Client.

After launching the FTP program, you have to connect your system to FileZilla. Click on File >> Site Manager, a new window will pop-up titled Site Manager.

Click on the New site button on the bottom-left side of the panel. You will notice a new folder named New site on the top left. Now, towards the Right side of the Panel fill in the fields asked in the General section and click on Connect. Input fields in general section are discussed below:

  1. Protocol: Select FTP – File Transfer Protocol.
  2. Host: Enter URL of your website.
  3. Port: Specific port required by your host.
  4. Encryption: Select Use explicit FTP over TLS if available.
  5. Logon type: Select Normal.
  6. User: Username of your FTP account.
  7. Password: Password of your FTP account.

NOTE: If you don’t know your FTP account Username, Password and Port number, go to Cpanel of your website and check for FTP Accounts in Files section or contact your hosting provider.

Upon successful connection, you can see the status – TLS connection established. You will find all the files and folders available in your system in the Local site column and in your website in the Remote site column.

Step 2: Uploading files from local site to remote site in wp-contents/uploads Folder.

To upload files in your WordPress website, browse the folder wp-contents/uploads in the remote site column.

WordPress stores media files for each year and month in the Uploads folder. Choose the current month folder or create a new folder for your bulk upload.

Now, navigate to the files you want to upload in the Local site column. Right click on selected files and click on Upload or simply drag those files from the local site to the uploads folder in your remote site column.

Step 3: Installing Add From Server plugin.

Even though you have uploaded the files to your WordPress website, you can’t locate them in the Media Library. This is because WordPress doesn’t automatically store them in the database. You can register the files uploaded via FTP using the plugin – Add From Server

Go to Plugins >> Add New and search for “Add From Server” in the search box. Click on Install and activate the plugin.

After Activating the plugin, Go to Media >> Add From Server. Notice the Current Directory and locate the files you uploaded using FTP client. Click the Checkbox and click on the Import button.

After Importing the files, you will see the following success message.

Finally, Go to Media >> Library to see all the files you have uploaded through FTP.

Using FTP, you can upload a number of images, videos, audio and other files in one go, within less amount of time and you won’t face any maximum file upload size issue.
