How to Create Custom Permalink Structure in WordPress

How to Create Custom Permalinks in WordPress?

In the WordPress dashboard, go to ‘Settings’ >> ‘Permalinks’. You shall see a list of options from which you can select your desired permalink.

The most used and suggested one is “Post Name” as it does not display any unnecessary numbers or dates, just the name of your site or blog.

Note: Using the permalink that includes your name helps in SEO ranking. Also, avoid using URLs with dates as the viewer might ignore your older content.

WordPress allows you to create custom permalinks. It will also suggest tags, choose and build a custom permalink according to your needs.

In the same section, further you will see optional questions like “Category” and “Tags”. You can make changes in that section as well.

Finally, do not forget to save the changes you have made.

How to Create Permalinks for Single Post?

WordPress allows you to edit the keywords in URLs of every page or post.  

In the WordPress content editor, go to the post or page of which you want to edit the permalink. Click on the title of the page and you will see a permalink above it.

You can simply click on the ‘Edit’ button next to the link. Now you can add anything your URL.

Once you are done editing, do not forget to click on ‘Save Changes’. In this way you can change the permalink of every post or page.

Creating Permalinks for Categories in WordPress.

Now, we shall see how to create permalinks in various categories or tags.

In the WordPress dashboard, go to ‘Posts’ >> ‘Categories’. You shall see a list of categories in your site. Once you click on one of it, you will see an ‘Edit’ button.

On clicking on it, you will go to the ‘Edit Category’ page where you can edit the permalink in the “Slug” option.

Similarly, for editing the tag’s permalink go to ‘Posts’ >> ‘Tags’. Click on the ‘Edit’ button of the tag you wish to edit.

Do not forget to save to ensure the change in permalink is visible on your site preview as well.

How to Create Custom Permalinks using Plugins?

In none of the above mentioned methods, we are allowed to completely edit the permalink.

Now, let us how to create complete custom permalinks for your site or blog? To do so we will be installing a plugin. In this article, we will be using the ‘Custom Permalinks’ plugin.

There are various other free as well as paid plugin available in WordPress for the same purpose like Permalink Customizer, WooCommerce Permalink Manager, WP Better Permalinks and many more.

Now, when you click on the post and its title you will see a permalink option at the end of the page. You can type your permalink in the provided text box.

Again, while editing the permalink of categories or tags you shall see a custom permalink option at the end.

In your dashboard you will see a ‘Custom Permalink’ option. Here you can see a list of permalinks used in your site. You are allowed to delete any of the permalink used.
