In addition, you should always add title tags and title attributes to your site’s images. This not only helps in providing more information to the users but also helps in improving your website’s SEO ranking. This is very helpful for the one’s who run a portfolio website or providing many statistical information on their page.

Image titles are basically the name that pop-ups after hovering on any picture in your webpage. When you add an image to your webpage we see many terms like caption, image-description, and alternate text.

It is very important that we learn the difference between title, caption and alt text.

Let us see, how a few terms related to images work?

  • Alternate text– When an image is not loaded due to various issues, we display a short descriptive text. Alt text is that short text displayed as an alternative of the image. It also helps search engines by describing the image.
  • Caption– It is a small block of information that generally appears below the image. It is not necessary to have a caption for all the images in your website.
  •  Title – The simple text that describes the image when you hover your mouse on it.
  • Image-Description Text – At times, when you click on an image you go to an attachment page, wherein you might find more information about this image. Image description is a brief information about your image you will find on this attachment page.

Image-oriented sites like photographer’s or event planner’s site usually prefer using this method, to elaborate more on specific images.

In this article, you will learn how to easily add title attributes to images in WordPress.

Title Attribute

The title attribute in images describes what’s on the image and the function of the image.  With title attribute you add a text description of your image. This makes it easy for your website’s visitors and search engine bots to understand the image and its context.

Let us show you some examples on how title attributes are used in HTML.

Normally an image is displayed in the following manner using the HTML tag.

<img src="/path/to/image/image.jpg" width="100" height="100" />

While doing so completes your purpose of displaying your image on the website but still the search engine bots can’t see your image. In order to make your image visible to the bots you can use the alternate text and title text attribute in your images.

In case you add both alternate text and title attribute to your image, your HTML would look like the following.

<img src="/path/to/image/image.jpg" width="100" height="100" alt="Image Alt text" title="Image title" />

The alternate tag is also displayed when an image link is broken, not found, or when a browser is unable to load images. This title attribute appears in a popup when you hover your mouse over the image.

In WordPress when you upload an image you can easily set the title attribute or alternate text without writing any code. By default, it uses the image filename in the title attribute. And if you don’t enter an alt attribute, it copies that to the alt attribute. Even though your title attribute and alt text are added by default we don’t recommend this practice. You really need to take the time to craft a proper alt text for every image you add to a post. Users and search engines will thank you for it.

Now, let us see how to add a title to your image in WordPress.
