How to fix sound problems in Windows 10

Are you facing audio problems in Windows 10? If your Windows system has no sound, you will be unable to hear from the speakers of certain apps and might not be able to hear anything from a video at all. Here are some troubleshoot tips and tricks to resolve the sound problems in Windows 10.

Check Sound Settings 

  • On your Windows taskbar, Right-click on the Sound icon.
  • Choose Open Volume Mixer from the menu.

  • You will see a set of volume sliders for devices and applications. Make sure all the volume controls for devices are unmuted.

  • If you see a red circle with a line through it next to your Volume controls, it means the volume for that application is muted. you need to adjust the slider to turn it on. 
  • Once done, close the window.

Check Speaker Output

Follow the below steps to check if the volume for the Output device is muted.

  • Go to Start Menu, and click Settings.
  • Navigate to Systems and select Sound.
  • Under Choose your Output device, click on the down arrow in the box and ensure you select your correct device from the drop-down menu.

  • Now make sure the volume control is not muted under the option Volume. 
  • If you see a red circle with a line through it next to your Volume control, it means the volume for that device is muted. you need to adjust the slider to turn it on. 
  • Once done, close the window.

Reinstall Audio Drivers 

The sound problems can be caused by faulty driver configurations. In such case reinstalling the audio drivers could help. Here is how to do it.

  • On your Windows Start menu, type Windows + X key simultaneously.
  • Select Device Manager and scroll down click the option Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click on your Sound driver and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
  • Go to Drivers tab and click Roll Back Driver and wait till the Windows completes the process.

  • If you don’t see the Roll Back Driver option, click the Uninstall button
  • Make sure you have the manufacture version of the driver on your system. Now go to the Drivers tab again and click install button again and wait till the Windows completes the installation process. 
  • Once done, check if the problem is resolved. If not read on further to try more troubleshooting tips.

Update your Sound Cards 

One of the most common causes of sound problems in Windows 10 is the glitches with your  Sound card drivers. An Update mostly helps to resolve the issue. Follow the below steps to 

  • On your Windows Start menu, type Windows + X key simultaneously.
  • Select Device Manager and scroll down click the option Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click on your Sound driver and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
  • Go to the Drivers tab and click Update Driver. The Windows will automatically search and download the latest update.

  • Once the update process is completed, restart your system and verify if your audio works. If not proceed to the next tip.

Update to an IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

If a regular Sound card update doesn’t help, try updating to a high definition audio device driver. Here is how to do it.

  • Select Device Manager and scroll down click the option Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click on your Sound driver and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
  • Go to the Drivers tab and click Update Driver.
  • Now instead of letting Windows choose a  driver software automatically, you can locate and manually install driver software. For that, click on the option Browse my computer for driver software.

  • Now choose Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. 
  • From the list, select and install High Definition Audio Device. 
  • Once the installation is complete, restart the system.

If the problem is not resolved , move on to the next tip.

Disable Audio Enhancements 

Audio Enhancement ensures that your audio devices work perfectly. However, enabling audio enhancements can sometimes cause sound glitches. Here is how to disable it.

  • On your Start Menu, go to Settings.
  • Click Systems and select Sound.
  • Click on the Sound Control Panel and right-click the default audio device.
  • Select Properties from the drop-down menu and go to the Enhancements tab.

  • Select the box next to the option Disable all enhancements.
  • Click Apply to confirm the changes.
  • Once done, restart your system and check if the problem is solved. If the problem persists, continue to the next tip.

Restart Audio Services 

For some reasons, your Audio services might stop working. This might be one of the causes of sound problems in your system.  In that case, you need to manually start the audio service. Here is how to do it.

  • On your Windows Start Menu, type Services in the search box.
  • Click on the Services from the results and scroll down to Windows Audio.
  • Right-click on the Windows Audio and click Restart from the drop-down menu.

  • Here, make sure the Audio Services is set to Automatic by default.

Try the Audio Troubleshooter

Sound problems can be fixed automatically by running the audio troubleshooter. Follow the below steps to run the troubleshooter.

  • On your Windows Start menu, type Control Panel in the search bar and hit enter.
  • Go to Troubleshooting.
  • Click Troubleshoot audio playback.

  • Choose the device you want to troubleshoot and follow the instructions to continue.
  • Once done check if the problem persists. If this doesn’t help, continue to the next method.

Update Windows 

Make sure your Windows system to updated to the latest version. Keeping your system updated helps to fix major problems and add new improvements for smooth operation. Here is how to check if your system has installed all the Windows Updates.

  • On the Windows Start menu, go to Settings.
  • Navigate to Update & Security and select Windows Update.
  • Click check for updates.
