How to set Screen Time on Mac

Screen Time is a useful productivity tool that aims at controlling the time spent on your device. It mainly addresses the negative effects of screen time and helps you stay focussed by setting time limits for apps and websites. Earlier Apple’s Screen Time was only available on the iPhone and iPad. With macOS Catalina, it now comes to Mac. 

Screen Time on Mac can be customized to set App Limits, Downtime rules, Parental controls and more. In this article, we explain how to use Screen Time on your Mac running macOS Catalina.

  1. On your Mac, open System Preferences from Apple menu bar.
  2. Navigate to Screen Time icon.
  3. Click on your Profile name on the left side of the window.
  4. Go to Options in the bottom left corner of the page.
  5. Click Turn On button in the top right corner of the page.

  1. On your Mac, open System Preferences from Apple menu bar.
  2. Navigate to Screen Time icon.
  3. Click on your Profile name on the left side of the window.
  4. Select App Limits on the left side of the page and click Turn On.
  5. Click + to add an app category
  6. Check the box next to the app category to set the limits as Every Day or set Custom schedule.
  7. To remove the apps from limits, simply uncheck the box next to the app category.

  2. Click on Screen Time icon.
  3. Select App Usage on the left side of the page. Here you can track your activity and time spent on each app

Downtime helps you stay focused by allowing access to only specific apps and phone calls. 

  1. On your Mac, open System Preferences from Apple menu bar.
  2. Navigate to Screen Time icon.
  3. Click on your Profile Name on the left side of the window.
  4. Select Downtime in the left side of the window and click Turn On 
  5. Click the radio button next to option Every Day or Custom to schedule downtime according to your preferences.

  1. On your Mac, open System Preferences from Apple menu bar.
  2. Click on Screen Time icon.
  3. Choose your Profile name on the left side of the window.
  4. Click Always Allowed on the left side of the page.
  5. Check the box next to each app which you want to access even during downtime.

  2. Navigate to Screen Time icon.
  3. Choose your Profile name on the left side of the window.
  4. Click Options in the bottom-left corner of the page.
  5. Hit Turn On button in the top right corner of the page. 
  6. Select the box next to the option Use Screen Time Passcode and set the passcode to ensure no one else will be able to change the screen time settings. 

How to set parental control with Screen Time on macOS Catalina 

The parental control feature is included under Screen Time in Mac running macOS Catalina. To set screen time as a parent make sure you first create your child’s user account. Following steps explains how to set up screen time as a parent.

  1. On your Mac, open System Preferences from Apple menu bar.
  2. Click on Screen Time icon.
  3. Click on your Profile name on the left side of the window.
  4. Go to Options in the bottom-left corner of the page.
  5. Click Turn On button in the top right corner of the page. 
  6. Select the box next to the option Use Screen Time Passcode and set the passcode to ensure no one else will be able to change the screen time settings. 

You can also customize the screen time to set app limits, downtime etc as a parent for your child’s account on Mac.
